Historical European Martial Arts

We’re pleased to announce our sister club Wessex Wolves HEMA please see wessexwolveshema.com for details of our dedicated Historical European Fighting Arts training on Mondays in Weymouth. NB on Thursdays at 7pm in Dorchester we will hold blended Traditional Japanese/ European weapons training.

As martial artist’s we are fascinated by all martial traditions and Systems from around the world. We have noticed there is not really that much difference in terms of techniques and practicality of fighting between Traditional Japanese Bu-jutsu and that which has been recorded historically in Europe and dubbed ‘Historical European Martial Arts’ or HEMA.

The only real distinctions are cultural and teaching methodologies may vary. The Japanese retained taught lineages better than their European counterparts and in both cultures sporting versions of martial arts have materialised and become dominant in the present, e.g. fencing, boxing, Judo, Brazilian jujitsu, MMA etc..

We want students to become adept at all aspects of martial arts, without boundaries.

Full contact and free play is encouraged alongside drills/ forms or kata to hone the principles.

Alongside the Traditional Japanese Weapons we train with:

  • Longsword
  • Arming sword
  • Sword & buckler
  • Rapier
  • Quarter staff
  • Staff
  • Sabre
  • Broadsword
  • Spadroon
  • Small sword

We would like to hear from anybody interested in expanding this area of Historical European Fighting Arts with us.
